Terms of Service
Effective date: October 1, 2026
These Terms explain the rules for using RentMyThread as a creator or a sponsor: how sponsored replies get posted, how placements are charged and paid out, and what each of us is responsible for. Please also read our Privacy Policy.
The short version
- You must be 18 or older and have an X account in good standing. Access is by approval: we review every account by hand and can refuse or revoke access.
- Creators let us post sponsor replies they approved in advance, from their own X account, under their own tweets. Every reply carries a disclosure hashtag (#ad, unless the copy already has #ad, #sponsored or #paidpartnership) and X’s Paid Partnership label.
- Sponsors prepay a balance (at least $50) and buy sponsored reply placements priced per 1,000 impressions (CPM) and billed in blocks. Charges are based on the impression counts X reports, which can lag.
- Sponsor copy runs in the creator’s voice, so it must be true for that creator. No made-up experiences, results or reviews.
- When a block’s views run out, the slot is re-auctioned. When a block ends with no one to take over, after 7 days, or when the tweet is deleted, the reply comes down.
- Creators get 80% of each charge and RentMyThread keeps 20%. Payouts go through Stripe once a creator has $10 or more in earnings.
- Unused sponsor balance is refundable on request, minus card processing fees. Money already spent is not, except for blocks voided under these Terms.
- Brand safety is best-effort, and we don’t guarantee views, virality or results. RentMyThread depends on X, which can restrict or end our access at any time.
- Massachusetts law applies. Questions go to support@rentmythread.com.
This summary is here to help you read the full text below. The full text is what applies.
1.About these Terms
RentMyThread (rentmythread.com) is operated by Joseph Dafforn, an individual based in Massachusetts, USA (“RentMyThread”, “we”, “us”). These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are a contract between you and us. They apply whenever you visit the site, sign in or use the service.
By signing in or using RentMyThread, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you don’t agree, don’t use the service.
RentMyThread is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by X Corp. You also remain bound by X’s Terms of Service and the X Rules.
2.Eligibility and accounts
- You must be at least 18 years old and able to form a binding contract.
- You can’t use RentMyThread if you’re located in a country under a US embargo, or if you or your organization is on a US sanctions list.
- You need an X account in good standing. You sign in with X, and each X account can hold one RentMyThread account, either as a creator or as a sponsor, not both. If X suspends, restricts or locks your account, you may lose access to RentMyThread too.
- Access is by approval only. To ask for it, email support@rentmythread.com with your X handle and whether you want to join as a creator or a sponsor. We review every request by hand, and only X accounts we’ve approved can sign in. We may refuse a request for any reason, and we may revoke an approval later (see Suspension and termination).
- If you use RentMyThread for a company or other organization, you confirm you’re authorized to accept these Terms for it, and “you” includes that organization.
- Keep the information you give us accurate. You’re responsible for everything done through your account. Tell us right away at support@rentmythread.com if you think someone else is using it.
3.How RentMyThread works
There are two roles:
- Creators are X users who approve sponsors in advance. When one of their own tweets takes off, RentMyThread posts an approved sponsor’s reply under it, from the creator’s account.
- Sponsors are brands and people who pay to have their message appear as that reply.
RentMyThread is a marketplace and the software that runs it. We match sponsors with creators’ tweets, post and remove the replies, measure views, charge sponsors and pay creators. We’re not an advertising agency, we don’t employ creators, and we don’t act as anyone’s agent. Creators and sponsors are independent of us and of each other.
4.Creators
Your permission to post
When you sign in as a creator, you authorize X to give us access to your account (read posts, write posts, read your profile, and stay connected). You authorize us to:
- read your recent original tweets and their public metrics, to tell when one is taking off;
- post a reply under your own tweet, from your account, containing copy from a sponsor you approved, exactly as you approved it, with #ad added at the end unless the copy already contains #ad, #sponsored or #paidpartnership, and marked with X’s Paid Partnership label;
- read the view counts of those replies; and
- delete those replies when their last paid block ends or another sponsor’s reply replaces them.
We only post copy you approved, from sponsors you approved, under your own tweets. We don’t post anything else, and we don’t like, repost, follow or send messages for you. Your settings control the rest: you can pause sponsored replies, set a daily limit, quiet hours, a minimum CPM and blocked categories, and choose confirm mode, which gives you 10 minutes to OK each reply in your dashboard before it posts. We don’t send notifications yet, so a reply you don’t confirm in time is skipped. Pausing, revoking a sponsor’s approval or raising your minimum CPM applies from the next block, not to a block that is already running.
Your responsibilities
- Follow the X Rules, X’s paid partnerships policy, the FTC Endorsement Guides and any other advertising and consumer-protection laws that apply to you.
- Only approve sponsors and copy you’re comfortable endorsing. Don’t approve claims you know or suspect are false or misleading.
- The reply is posted in your voice, so don’t approve copy that misstates your own experience or opinion. If the copy says or suggests that you use, have tried, like or recommend something, it must be true for you.
- Never remove, edit, hide or obscure the disclosure hashtag or the Paid Partnership label, and don’t edit a sponsored reply. If a sponsored reply is edited so that its disclosure is gone, we flag it for review and may void its block or withhold earnings for it.
- Don’t inflate views or engagement on your tweets or on sponsored replies, for example with bots, bought engagement, view farms or coordinated activity.
- You’re responsible for your own tweets, including the ones sponsored replies appear under.
Deleting a sponsored reply
You can delete a sponsored reply on X at any time. If you delete it within 24 hours of the start of its current block, that block is voided: the sponsor isn’t charged for it and you earn nothing from it. If you delete it later, the block is charged for the views it delivered up to then. If you delete the tweet the reply sits under, the block is charged for the views it delivered and we delete the reply.
If you disconnect RentMyThread from your X account while a sponsored reply is up, we can no longer delete that reply for you. Please delete it yourself, or tell us at support@rentmythread.com.
5.Sponsors
A campaign sets your reply copy, category, optional brand X handle, CPM bid, the most you’ll pay per block (“max per reply”, or cap), total budget, optional targeting, dates and topics to avoid, and whether to keep your reply up when a block runs out (see Sponsored placements, blocks and charges). Any link goes in the copy itself.
- Nothing posts until a creator approves your campaign and its exact copy. Copy can’t be edited after it’s approved; new copy needs a new campaign and a new approval.
- We add #ad at the end of any copy that doesn’t already contain #ad, #sponsored or #paidpartnership, and every reply is marked as a Paid Partnership on X.
- Your copy, your brand handle, any links in your copy, the pages they lead to and the products or services you promote must be truthful, lawful and backed up by evidence where needed, and must follow the content rules, X’s ads policies and paid partnerships policy, and the FTC Endorsement Guides. You confirm that every claim in your copy is true and that you have evidence for any claim that needs it, such as claims about health, performance, prices or earnings.
- Your copy is posted in the creator’s voice. It must not say or suggest that the creator has used, tried, likes or recommends your product or service unless that creator has confirmed it’s true. Don’t make up experiences, results or reviews.
- Your copy must make clear which brand, product or service it promotes.
- You’re responsible for the products and services you promote and for whatever happens on the pages your copy links to.
- Your campaign gives you no right to use a creator’s name, handle, likeness, tweets or the sponsored reply (including screenshots of it) anywhere outside the reply itself, for example in your own ads, unless that creator gives you separate written permission.
- We may review copy, and we may reject, pause or remove any campaign, copy or reply at any time, even after it was approved or posted.
6.Sponsored placements, blocks and charges
What sponsors buy is advertising: a disclosed, paid-partnership reply placed under a creator’s tweet. It’s priced by CPM, the price per 1,000 impressions of the reply, and billed in blocks of impressions as described below. Impressions are only the unit we measure and bill by; we don’t sell followers, likes or other engagement.
Winning a reply slot
When a creator’s tweet takes off by the measures in the creator’s settings, we pick the highest CPM bid among the sponsors that creator approved and that are eligible for that tweet. Eligibility depends on things like the creator’s minimum CPM, your budget and balance, brand-safety checks, blocked categories, targeting and daily limits. A campaign gets at most one new reply per creator per day. The winner pays its own bid. Only one sponsored reply is up under a tweet at a time.
Blocks and holds
A placement is billed in blocks of views (impressions). A block is your cap divided by your CPM, times 1,000, rounded down: for example, a $25 cap at a $10 CPM is a block of 2,500 views. When a block starts, we hold its full cap from your available balance. When it ends, you’re charged the views it delivered times your CPM divided by 1,000, rounded down to the cent and never more than the cap, and the rest of the hold goes back to your available balance.
How views are counted
A block’s views are the increase in the reply’s impression count, as reported by X’s API, since the block started. We rely on X’s numbers and don’t measure views independently. X decides what counts as an impression (for example, it may not count the creator’s own views), X may revise its numbers, and X’s counter can lag behind real views, sometimes by an hour or more. We check live replies every few minutes, so a block can deliver more views than it bought before we see that it’s used up. Those extra views are free. Charges are based on the counts X reported when we measured them, and we’ll correct clear errors when we find them.
When a block runs out: renewals and replacements
When a block’s views are used up, the slot is re-auctioned among eligible sponsors:
- Renewal. If your campaign has “keep my reply up” on and you still bid at least as much as the top competing bid (ties go to you), your next block starts on the same reply, with a new hold of your cap.
- Replacement. Otherwise the highest eligible bidder wins. The current reply is deleted, and the winner’s reply is posted under the same tweet once X confirms the deletion.
- No one eligible. If no eligible sponsor bids, the reply is deleted.
Other ways a block ends
- A block that hasn’t used up its views 7 days after it started is charged for the views it delivered, and the reply is deleted.
- If the tweet the reply sits under is deleted, the block is charged for the views it delivered, and the reply is deleted.
- A block is voided, with no charge and its full hold returned, when:
- the creator deletes the reply within 24 hours of the block’s start;
- a creator in confirm mode declines the reply or doesn’t confirm it in time;
- before the reply posts, the creator pauses sponsored replies or withdraws approval, the campaign is paused or ended, or the tweet fails a brand-safety check after an edit;
- the previous sponsor’s reply under the tweet can’t be removed within an hour;
- the reply fails to post; or
- we void it, for example for a safety or policy problem.
7.Sponsor balance, payments and refunds
- Sponsors pay in advance by adding funds to a balance through Stripe Checkout. Each top-up must be between $50 and $50,000. Amounts are in US dollars and don’t include any taxes that may apply to you, which are your responsibility.
- Your balance is prepaid credit for sponsored placements on RentMyThread. It isn’t a bank account, doesn’t earn interest and can’t be transferred. Card payments are processed by Stripe; we never see or store your full card details.
- Holds and charges come out of your balance as described above. If your balance can’t cover a block’s cap, it won’t start.
Refunds
Unused balance (your available balance, not money held for a running block) is refundable on request. Email support@rentmythread.com from the email on your account, or tell us your X handle, and we’ll refund it to the original payment method, minus the card processing fees we paid on it. If your balance came from several top-ups, the refund may arrive as several smaller refunds, one per payment. If a payment can’t be refunded to its original method (for example, the card was closed), we’ll agree another method with you. When we issue a refund, we deduct it and the kept fees from your balance and pause your active campaigns; you can resume them when you’re ready. Money held for a running block returns to your available balance when the block ends and can then be refunded. Amounts already charged for delivered views are not refundable, except blocks voided under these Terms, which are returned to your balance automatically. Refunds can take several business days to reach you.
Chargebacks and card refunds
Please contact us before disputing a charge with your bank. If a payment is refunded (including at your request) or disputed, we deduct that amount from your balance and pause your active campaigns. If that leaves your balance negative, you owe us the difference and we may suspend your account until it’s paid. If the money comes back to us (for example, a dispute is decided in our favor or a refund fails), we credit it back to your balance. Your campaigns stay paused until you resume them.
8.Creator earnings and payouts
- For every block that’s charged, the creator earns 80% of the charge and RentMyThread keeps 20% as its platform fee (rounded to the nearest cent). The fee comes out of the sponsor’s charge; sponsors pay nothing extra on top. For example, a $10.00 charge earns the creator $8.00 and RentMyThread $2.00.
- Payouts are made through Stripe Connect. To get paid, you set up a Stripe Express account with Stripe, which verifies your identity and holds your bank details. Right now, payouts need a US-based Stripe account.
- When your pending earnings reach $10 and your Stripe account can receive transfers, we send them to your Stripe account automatically. Stripe then pays out to your bank on its own schedule. Payouts can be delayed, for example while sponsor funds are still settling with Stripe or while Stripe needs more information from you.
- You’re responsible for any taxes on your earnings. We or Stripe may ask for tax information and issue tax forms (such as a Form 1099) where the law requires it.
- We may correct earnings credited by mistake.
- If we suspend your account for suspected fraud or a breach of these Terms (such as inflated views or a removed disclosure), we may hold your payouts while we review it, and reverse earnings from blocks we void.
- Your earnings come from sponsors’ card payments. If a sponsor payment behind your earnings is later refunded, disputed or found to be fraudulent, we may hold those earnings, take them back from your future earnings, or reverse them. We may also wait to pay earnings until the sponsor payment that funded them has cleared.
Payment processing services for creators on RentMyThread are provided by Stripe and are subject to the Stripe Connected Account Agreement, which includes the Stripe Terms of Service (together, the “Stripe Services Agreement”). By agreeing to these Terms or continuing to operate as a creator on RentMyThread, you agree to be bound by the Stripe Services Agreement, as Stripe may modify it from time to time. As a condition of RentMyThread enabling payment processing services through Stripe, you agree to provide RentMyThread accurate and complete information about you and your business, and you authorize RentMyThread to share it and transaction information related to your use of the payment processing services provided by Stripe.
9.Content rules and prohibited ads
Sponsored replies can’t be age-gated or targeted the way X Ads can, so some things are off limits. Sponsored copy, brand handles, links in the copy, the pages they lead to and the things they promote must not involve:
- anything illegal where the reply may be seen, or that promotes illegal activity;
- sexual or adult content or services;
- weapons, ammunition or explosives;
- drugs, drug paraphernalia, cannabis, CBD or hemp products, tobacco or vaping products;
- alcohol;
- prescription drugs, online pharmacies or dietary supplements;
- dating or companionship services;
- gambling, betting or lotteries;
- political or issue advertising, such as ads about candidates, parties, elections, legislation or ballot measures;
- hate, harassment, threats or violence;
- false, misleading or unsupported claims, including health, weight-loss, income and investment claims, or anything promising guaranteed returns;
- get-rich-quick schemes, pyramid or multi-level marketing recruitment, payday loans or unregistered securities;
- fake followers, views, likes or other engagement, or the sale of social media accounts;
- malware, phishing, spam or deceptive links;
- counterfeit goods, or content that infringes someone else’s intellectual property or privacy;
- impersonation, or implying an endorsement by a person or brand that didn’t give it;
- made-up testimonials, reviews, experiences or results;
- products or messages aimed at children; or
- anything that breaks the X Rules or X’s ads or paid partnerships policies.
Financial and crypto products are allowed only if they’re lawful to promote where the reply may be seen, follow X’s ads policies, and make no promise of returns. We decide whether content breaks these rules.
Using the service fairly
Don’t interfere with or attack the service, get around access controls or limits, scrape it, or open extra accounts to get around a refusal or suspension. Don’t use RentMyThread to break X’s terms, to make fraudulent payments, or to violate anyone’s rights.
10.Reporting content and IP complaints
If you think a sponsored reply or anything on our site infringes your copyright or trademark, impersonates you or your brand, or breaks these Terms, email support@rentmythread.com with:
- your name and how to reach you;
- a link to the reply or page;
- which right or rule you think it breaks, and why; and
- for a copyright or trademark complaint, what work or mark it is, and a statement that you own the right or are authorized to act for its owner and that your complaint is accurate.
We may remove the content, tell the sponsor or creator involved, and suspend accounts that break the rules again. You can also report a reply directly to X.
11.Brand safety is best-effort
Before a reply posts, we check the creator’s tweet with an automated keyword filter that tries to skip tweets about tragedy, violence, self-harm, disasters or serious illness, and posts it can’t read reliably. Sponsors can list topics to avoid, and creators can block categories. When we see that a tweet was edited, we check it again.
This filtering is best-effort and comes with no guarantee. It will miss some tweets that should have been skipped and skip some that were fine, and creators can edit or add to their tweets after a reply posts. We don’t promise that a sponsored reply will never appear next to content a sponsor or creator finds objectionable. If you see a problem, email support@rentmythread.com and we’ll look at it.
12.No guarantee of views or results
We don’t guarantee that any tweet will take off or trigger a sponsored reply, that a reply will be the top reply or stay there (X decides reply order), or that a reply will get any number of views, clicks, sales, followers or earnings. Earnings examples and calculators on the site are illustrations, not promises.
RentMyThread depends on X and Stripe. Outages, API changes, rate limits, pricing changes, account actions or policy changes at X or Stripe can delay, interrupt or end the service or parts of it, and we’re not responsible for them.
If X or Stripe restricts the service
We post and measure replies through X’s API, and X may restrict or end our access at any time, with or without notice. If that happens, or if X, Stripe or the law otherwise forces us to stop the service or part of it:
- blocks already running are charged for the views they delivered before the stop, or voided;
- sponsors’ unused balance is refunded as described in Refunds; and
- creators’ earnings that are owed are paid out, even if they’re under $10, subject to Stripe’s requirements and to Creator earnings and payouts.
13.Suspension and termination
You can stop using RentMyThread at any time. Creators can pause sponsored replies in settings and disconnect the app in X’s settings. To close your account, email support@rentmythread.com.
We may suspend, restrict or close your account, or revoke its approval, at any time, with or without notice. Reasons include a breach of these Terms, a risk of fraud or harm, a legal requirement, or a requirement from X or Stripe.
When an account is suspended or closed:
- we stop matching it to new tweets;
- blocks already matched or running finish and are charged for the views they deliver, unless we void them, and when they end the reply is deleted or another sponsor takes the slot;
- a sponsor’s unused balance is refunded as described in Refunds, minus anything owed to us; and
- when an account is closed, the creator’s earnings that are owed are paid out, even if they’re under $10, subject to Stripe’s requirements and to any hold or reversal under Creator earnings and payouts.
Sections that by their nature should last beyond the end of your account, such as amounts owed, licenses we need for our records, disclaimers, limits of liability, indemnity and governing law, continue to apply.
14.Intellectual property and licenses
- Sponsor content. You keep ownership of your copy, names, logos and handles. You give us, and each creator who approves your campaign, a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to reproduce, post, display and distribute your copy (including any links in it) and brand handle as sponsored replies on X, to show them in the service, and to keep them in our records. You confirm you have the rights needed to grant this and that your content doesn’t infringe anyone’s rights.
- Creator content. You keep ownership of your tweets. You give us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to read, store, analyze and display your tweets and their metrics as needed to run the service, for example to decide when a tweet takes off and to show sponsors where their replies ran.
- Our service. The RentMyThread name, site and software belong to us. You may use the service only as these Terms allow; don’t copy, resell or reverse engineer it.
- Feedback. If you send us ideas or feedback, we can use them without owing you anything.
15.Disclaimers
To the fullest extent the law allows, RentMyThread is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, accuracy of metrics, and uninterrupted or error-free operation. Some places don’t allow these disclaimers, so some of them may not apply to you.
16.Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we won’t be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, revenue, data or goodwill, or for anything X or Stripe does, including suspending your account, even if we were told such damages were possible.
Our total liability for all claims relating to RentMyThread is limited to the greater of (a) $100 and (b) the amounts you paid us as a sponsor, or the platform fees we kept on your sponsored replies as a creator, in the 12 months before the event that led to the claim. This limit doesn’t reduce our duty to refund unused sponsor balance or to pay creator earnings owed under these Terms.
Nothing in these Terms limits liability that can’t be limited by law, such as for fraud.
17.Indemnity
You agree to defend and indemnify us against claims, losses and costs (including reasonable legal fees) that arise from your content, your campaigns and the products you promote, your tweets, your breach of these Terms, or your violation of any law or anyone else’s rights.
If you’re a sponsor, this also covers the creators who post your replies: you’ll defend and indemnify them against claims that arise from your copy, the products or services you promote, or the pages your copy links to.
18.Disputes between creators and sponsors
Creators and sponsors deal with each other at their own risk. If you have a dispute with another user, you’ll try to resolve it with them directly; we may help, but we don’t have to. To the extent the law allows, you release us from claims that arise from disputes between users, except claims about our own duties under these Terms, such as refunds and payouts owed. If you’re in California, you waive California Civil Code section 1542 for these claims, which would otherwise limit this release to claims you know about.
19.Changes to the service and these Terms
We may change the service and these Terms. When we change the Terms, we’ll post the new version here with a new effective date, and for material changes we’ll give reasonable notice first, for example by email or a notice in the app. Changes don’t apply to blocks that already started. If you keep using RentMyThread after the changes take effect, you accept them. If you don’t accept them, stop using the service and, if you’re a sponsor, ask for a refund of your unused balance.
20.Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute relating to these Terms or RentMyThread will be brought only in the state or federal courts located in Massachusetts, and you and we consent to their jurisdiction. Either of us may instead bring an individual claim in small claims court if it qualifies.
Before starting a claim, please email support@rentmythread.com and give us 30 days to try to resolve it informally. If you’re a consumer, this section doesn’t take away any rights the law where you live gives you that can’t be waived.
21.General
- These Terms and our Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about RentMyThread.
- If part of these Terms can’t be enforced, the rest still applies. Not enforcing a term right away isn’t a waiver.
- You may not transfer your account or these Terms without our written consent. We may transfer them to whoever takes over RentMyThread.
- We’re not responsible for delays or failures caused by events outside our reasonable control.
- We may send you notices by email or in the app. Send notices to us at the address below.
